My name is Suruchi Kumari, a fashion management student from NIFT Patna. I am a growth executive at DESCAT UK, a sustainable and ethical fashion brand. DESCATUK is committed to making the world a greener place by assisting businesses in meeting the UN Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action.
It was a wonderful experience to attend such events where several sustainable fashion companies were present and discussed the environment's sustainability.I consider myself extremely fortunate to have been able to attend this type of event and will be eternally grateful to the Descat uk for providing me with this opportunity.
Hecho por Nosotros hosted a Side Event at the 2021 High Level Political Forum. The side event continued the global debate begun at the Hecho por Nosotros' side event at the 2020 United Nations High Level Political Forum on ‘MSMEs: Strengthening local value chains through transparency and traceability to ignite circular fashion.'This year's side event encouraged discussion among global leaders from various sectors of the fashion industry about how the garment industry can serve as a platform to emerge sustainably from the COVID-19 pandemic, with a focus on the role of technology and digital tools in the hands of handworkers, primarily women and MSMEs.
The discussion was centred on the Sustainable Development Goals 1, 5, 8, 10, 12, 13, and 17.
Contribution of DESCAT UK to SDG 2030
We received a baseline score of 89.6 for our commitments to human rights, positive labour practises, environmental management systems, and good governance. We contributed to ten SDGs, which are SDGs 1, 5, 8, 9, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, and 16. Our people and environmental SDGs place us in the top 10% of global fashion companies our age and size.
So, The programme was split into two parts: a panel discussion and breakout "Living Rooms" seminars on various topics. There was active discussion on a specific topic among the audience and experts facilitating the discussion in each breakout room.
In Panel discussion, Adriana Marina, the founder of Hecho x Nosotros & animana, was the first to arrive and briefed the audience about the event and NGO. Around 200 people from various countries attend the events, including the host. They are all discussing sustainable fashion and their requirements in the textile industry.
I choosed the topic Investing in Sustainable fashion. This breakout room was hosted by Sumeet Singh, Sunny Dogra and Radhika Shah in which members discuss the challenges and perspectives from a sustainable and responsible investor's viewpoint.
They begin by emphasising the critical importance of sustainable fashion and tell us about the various issues that investors face such as transparency, a lack of technology platforms for sustainability and environmental implications.
Need for Sustainable Fashion
The fashion industry contributes 10% of global carbon emissions, which is more than international flights and maritime shipping put together.
A single cotton T-shirt can consume up to 2700 litres of water.
Every year, the fashion industry generates over 92 million tonnes of waste and consumes 79 trillion litres of water.
Approximately 73 per cent of garments produced end up in landfills or are incinerated, while less than 1 per cent are recycled, resulting in a material value loss of over US$100 billion per year.
DESCAT UK is responsible sustainable fashion brand
Descat UK is a sustainable and ethical company that helps the environment by reducing plastic pollution through the production of handloom fabrics made from GRS Certified upcycled yarn and assisting local women in Uttarakhand, India's northern Himalayan state.
We manufacture recycled fabric for delay in landfills. Recycled materials are the most environmental friendly option because no new materials are created (saving a lot of resources and energy), and it also keeps existing materials from going to waste.
Recycled cotton, recycled cotton silk, recycled polester cotton, and recycled knitted fabric are all manufactured by us. Our recycled fabric is GRS Certified, contributing to the circular economy.
By purchasing this type of fabric, you can help save the environment
by reducing 92 Kg of CO2 emissions,
preventing 126000 litres of water from becoming polluted,
and reducing 30 Kg of waste to landfills.
In addition, purchasing 100 metres of fabric provides one artisan with 18 days of work.
